Q

Data Storage

A

Data storage is another type of online service. Many organisations are providing facilities for you to store and back up your data on their computers, and to make files available to share with others. The current term used for online data storage is ‘cloud storage’

Q

What is Packet Switching?

A

Packet Switching is a mode of data transmission in which a message is broken into a number of parts which are sent independently, over whatever route is optimum/the fastest for each packet and is reassembled at the destination. The packets are composed of a header and a payload.

Q

What is the store and forward system?

A

The store and forward system is where the sender sends a recipient who is offline and is stored on an email server and waits until the recipient signs in and then the server sends the message to them.

Q

What is File Compression? And some advantages?

A

File Compression makes files smaller so they take up less space in computer memory. Compression is also known as ‘zipping’ and is done using an algorithm. One file can be compressed or many files can be compressed into one.

  • It saves memory space on computers e.g. web server
  • Files will upload and download more quickly
  • Files will better fit restrictions, such as the attachment limit on email
17
Q

Advantages of Collaborative Working

A
  • Users do not need to travel to work together; saving money, time and the environment
  • Users can work on the same document instead of having different versions of the same file
18
Q

What is an online community?

A

Online communities exist in a virtual world. This is an unreal world which is created by the computer and does not exist in the real world. Some communities need to be involved at the same time, such as some online gaming, whereas others can have users interacting at different times such as a forum or VLE.

19
Q

What is VoIP?

A

VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) is a method of real-time communication over the internet such as Skype. The data transmitted is audio and video as two computers are connected through their unique IP addresses

20
Q

What are the advantages and disadvantages of VoIP?

A

Advantages:

  • Able to connect someone anywhere in the world where there is an internet connection.
  • Uses internet-only so no additional cost
  • Reduces travel costs, travel time and etc.

Disadvantages:

  • Relies on internet connection so it can be a slow connection or it can cut out.
  • As the audio is being converted to digital, transmitted over the internet and converted back again, the voice quality can be affected.
  • Data exchanged over the internet is at risk of security threats such as hackers.
21
Q

What is Cloud Computing?

A

Cloud computing is where data is saved on external servers instead of the user’s hard drive. The external servers are called hosts and are owned by a hosting company. Some good examples are Dropbox, Microsoft One Drive and Google Cloud. Cloud users can access software, data and storage provided by their hosting company. Users usually access the cloud through a web browser or mobile app, they do not directly access the servers.

22
Q

What is an RFID chip?

A

Radio Frequency Identification chips are a way to embed processors into everyday objects. They can be used to identify and track an object. It is similar to a bar code, although it does not need to be scanned.

23
Q

What is Ubiquitous Computing?

A

Ubiquitous means ‘existing everywhere’. Ubiquitous computing is where processors are embedded into everyday objects.

24
Q

What is an ISP?

A

An ISP or Internet Service Provider allows connection to the internet for a client.

25
Q

What is Wireless, Broadband and Dial-up connection?

A

Wireless connects without using wires. Broadband is a wired connection through a broadband supplier and dial-up is a wired connection using a modem and telephones lines.

26
Q

What is a Protocol?

A

Protocols are a set of rules that allow computer systems to connect with different systems to transfer data. This is important on the internet as it involves many different types of devices.

27
Q

What is a Hyperlink?

A

A hyperlink connects web pages together. When a hyperlink is clicked, a user is taken to another page on a website or a different website.

28
Q

What is HTML?

A

HTML or HyperText Markup Language is the language used to create web pages.

29
Q

What is a Web Crawler?

A

A web crawler are small automated programs or bots that automatically carry out processes all the time without any human involvement.

30
Q

What are Simplex, Full-duplex and half-duplex transmission?

A

Simplex transmission are signals that go in one direction at a time. Full-duplex transmission are signals that go in both directions at the same time. Half-duplex transmission are signals that go in both directions but the devices don’t transmit at the same time.

31
Q

What is Client-side processing?

A

Client-side processing uses the client’s computer to process web page data in data exchange. Client-side processing is where the interactivity on a web page is downloaded and processed using the client’s processor. The code which makes this possible is a scripting language (web scripts)

32
Q

What is the role of a web script?

A

Web scripts are included in the code of the web page and run when the page is loaded into the user’s browser. In client-side processing it matters which browser the user is using, because this will affect how the script is understood by the computer and shown on screen.

33
Q

What is the World Wide Web?

A

The World Wide Web is a term which describes the collection of webpages which are stored on web servers connected to the internet.

34
Q

What is a URL?

A

URL or Uniform Resource Locator is the address of a World Wide Web page.

35
Q

What is a USB?

A

USB, short for Universal Serial Bus, is an industry standard that defines cables, connectors and communications protocols for connection, communication, and power supply between computers and devices
