Q

What is a magnetic resonance imaging scna

A

A scanner that produces no x-rays and gives a high resolution three dimensional image of the brain structure. When energy pulses are detected by . the scanner, the relative distribution of hydrogen atoms in the brain can be mapped.

Q

What are the advantages

A
  • Allows non invasive procedures to take place
  • Allows non-exposure to radiation and therefore reduces risk of radiation induced cancer
  • MRI has better resolution so it is helpful for detecting abnormalities in soft tissue such as the brain

Q

What are the disadvantages

A
  • People with metal in their bodies cannot go inside because the MRI is a large magnetic field and can result in death of the patient.
  • It is an issue for people with clausterphobia because the patient has to stay in a narrow tube with a loud noise for several minutes
  • It is also an issue for small children because the patient must stay in the same position for a long time, and children can be very restless.
  • Very expensive
  • The high resolution can detect abnormalities that are not related to the symptoms of the patient.
