6.4.2: Fundamental particles Flashcards
(9 cards)
Antiparticles
A particle with the same mass but opposite charge as its fundamental particle pair
Lepton
A fundamental particle. There are 6 leptons and 6 anti-leptons:
Electron, muon, tau
electron neutrino, muon neutrino, tau neutrino and their anti pairs
They do not interact with the strong force
Quark
A fundamental particle. There are 6 quarks and 6 anti-quarks:
up down charm strange top bottom and their anti pairs
Hadrons
Any particle made from quarks
Baryons
Heavy particles made from 3 quarks
Mesons
Particles made from 2 or more quarks and always consisting of a quark-antiquark pair
Up quark
Charge: +2/3 e
Symbol: u
Anti up is the corresponding antiquark
Down quark
Charge: -1/3 e
Symbol: d
Anti down is the corresponding antiquark
Strange quark
Charge: -1/3 e
Symbol: s
Anti strange is the corresponding antiquark
