What is Matter?
Anything that takes up space and has mass
What are the three states of matter?
Solid, Liquid, Gas
Are Solids Compressible?
No
Do solids maintain their volume?
Yes
Do liquids maintain their volume
Yes
Are liquids compressible?
No
Are gasses compressible?
Yes
Do gasses maintain their volume or assume their container’s?
Assume their containers
What is a crystalline solid?
A solid whose particles are in a long range repeating order - such as salt, diamonds, and sugar
What is an amorphous solid?
A solid with randomly distributed particles, such as plastic, glass, and charcoal
What is the composition of an element?
A pure substance that cannot be separated into simpler substances (eg Helium)
What is the composition of a compound?
Multiple pure substances bound together (eg H2O)
What is the composition of a heterogeneous mixture?
Variable composition that is not uniform throughout (eg wet sand)
What is the composition of a homogeneous mixture?
Variable composition that is consistent throughout (eg tea)
What is a pure substance?
Matter whose composition does not change from one sample to the next - made of a single type of atom or molecule.
