Modem
A hardware device that converts data so it can be transmitted from computer to computer over telephone wires.
Browser
A program used to access the World Wide Web that displays HTML files.
Packet
A unit of data that can be sent across a network.
Protocol
An agreed format or set of rules to transmit data.
WAN
Wide area network of interconnected computers and devices.
ISP
To access the internet we normally need an internet service provider. It is a company that provides us with access to the internet.
Internet browser
Is a program that allows the computer to visit and display the information that a webpage contains.
URL
Uniform resource locator. This is website address. It is made up of the access protocol http and a domain name e.g. amazon.com. The URL is translated into the unique internet address of the web server that hosts the website.
Web server
A computer that hosts many websites. Retrieving information form a web server is known as downloading. Sending-uploading.
http
Hypertext transfer protocol is the core protocol that governs transmissions of data via the internet. It is an access protocol. Work as request-response action. Not secure.
TCP
Transmission control protocol. Handles the transfer of the data and also checks to ensure that the transmission is error free.
HTML
Hypertext mark-up language. A document consists of two parts:
the content to be displayed
instructions on how to interpret the content
Marks-up
Are instructions on how content is to be formatted, structured and displayed by the browser.
Hypertext
Is text that contains information and also a link to other information, such as another webpage, website or picture. I contains hyperlink that is URL of the additional content.
IP address
Each device has a specific address. Without an address other devices would not be able to communicate with the device, as the TCP would not know where to send the communication. It is assigned by the network.
