Evidence for evolution Flashcards
What does evolution promote?
Diversity and adaptation
What are the theories for the history of life?
Creationism, Transforms and Evolution
What is a ring species?
Connected series of populations that can interbreed with relatively closely related populations but there exists at least two end species that are too distantly related to interbreed.
What is evolution?
Any change in gene frequency
What is gene frequency?
the relative proportion of a gene in a population
What are the laws of mendelian inheritance?
Heredity is not blending
Acquired traits are not inherited
No change in gene frequencies
What is Weismann’s principle?
hereditary information moves only from genes to body cells, or gremlin to soma, not the other way around.
What is the central dogma?
there is a two step process, transcription and translation, by which information in genes flows into proteins, DNA, RNA, Proteins, not the other way around
What is the Hardy-Weinburg equilibrium?
The gene frequency in a population not evolving. The frequency of alleles in a population will remain constant from generation to generation.
What are the conditions for HWE?
No mutation No selection Random mating Mendelian inheritance Large population with no genetic drift
What is genetic drift?
Chance events that cause allele frequencies to fluctuate unexpectedly from one generation to the next, occurs because mendelian inheritance isn’t exact
What is a mutation?
A heritable change in genetic material
What is the ultimate source of new alleles?
Mutation
How are mutations in multicellular organisms passed on?
Only passed on if in cell lines that produce gametes
What is a point mutation?
Change in one single thing
