6.6 Flashcards
(7 cards)
What are the alternatives to fossil fuels?
Renewable energy:
- solar, wind, tidal, geothermal
Nuclear power:
- recyclable energy
+ low carbon footprint
+ high efficiency
- very high cost
- dangerous
Biofuels:
+ carbon neutral
- deforestation such as palm oil plantations in Malaysia
What are biofuels?
- reduces burning fossil fuels and co2 emissions
- used as vehicle fuel
- more environmentally friendly
What are the radical technologies to reduce carbon emissions?
Carbon capture and storage
Hydrogen fuel cells
What is carbon capture and storage?
Capturing carbon when it is released due to the burning of fossil fuels, burying it deep underground
uncertainties on if stored carbon will stay trapped underground
What is a hydrogen fuel cell?
produces electricity and can be used for buildings and a power source for electric vehicles
What are types of recyclable energy?
Nuclear
- Nuclear waste can be reused
But
- risk of safety
- disposal is long
- technology is complex
- cost of construction of power plants are high
What countries use biofuels?
UK and Brazil
Brazil:
- Diversified and improved energy mix
- helped reduce carbon emissions
-
