Professional Conduct CARTA Definition
As registered respiratory therapists (RRT), we individually and collectively strive to maintain the highest ethical, professional and moral standards.
RRTs are obliged to provide competent, safe and respectful care, which respects the integrity of the clinician/patient relationship.
We must deal in a dignified manner with colleagues, patients and members of the public, and demonstrate accountability for our actions.

THE ALBERTA HEALTHCARE ACT-Purpose
- Establishes the goals, process and governance of how healthcare will be delivered in Alberta
- Establishes the need for regulated professions to deliver healthcare
- Establishes the requirement that we govern our own profession and report to the government
- College and Association of Respiratory Therapists of Alberta (CARTA)
- Thus we have our own section under the AHA
The Alberta Health Care Act and RT Profession
Health professionals are encouraged and empowered to work collaboratively, ethically, efficiently, and in ways that maximize their skills, training and competencies
Rt Authorized Restricted Activities
- Cut a body tissue to administer anything by an invasive procedure
- Performing blood analysis
- assisting in cardiac procedures
- performing hemo-dynamic monitoring
- assisting in anesthesia
- administering injections
- Suturing
- Performing routing wound care
- To insert or remove instruments, devices, fingers or hands beyond the point in the nasal passages where they normally narrow and beyond the parynx for the purpose of inserting or removing tubes
- to administer blood or blood products when assisting in anesthesia
- To order any form of ionining radiation in medical radiography for the purpose of a chest xray
Despite authorization RT must restrict themselves to activities they are competent to perform and perform activties in accordance to the standards of practice
