Why did Turkey need support from the Truman Doctrine?

A
  • Turkey was surrounded by communist countries who wanted to take over to get easy access to Africa to spread communist there.
  • Stalin wanted to create a buffer zone of communist countries around Russia from attacks like the one Hitler lead though Poland.
  • Turkey and Russia share a border so allows easy access to Russia.
  • If Truman Doctrine just helped Greece eradicate communism and if Turkey turned communist then Greece would be completely surrounded by communist countries and then would probs able turn communist.

Q

Who was Tito and what happened to him when he took aid from Marshall Plan?

A

During 1946-1948 Stalin embarked on the takeover of Eastern Europe. However on some Eastern countries communist took over without any Soviet help of influence such as Yugoslavia. In 1945 communist leader Tito drove out German forces and took control. Resulting in him being him highly regarded by Stalin but there being an underlining tension between the two as Tito did not see why he should follow Stalin’s orders.
Tension rose in 1948and became public when Stalin threw Yugoslavia out of COMINFORM. Stalin also enforced economic sanctions meaning he forbade communist countries to trade with Yugoslavia. Tito turned to western countries and they helped him. Britain’s set up a £30 million trade deal and America offered Marshall aid. Stalin was furious and made sure no other communist countries would do this.

Q

How did America react to COMECON and COMINFORM?
