What happens in chapter 3?

A

Begins with nicks description of Gatsby Saturday night party’s

Nick is eventually invited to one of these party’s, but not by Gatsby himself, Gatsby chauffeur brings the invitation to nicks door

Gatsby mansion was full of guests, very few of them seem to have been invited guests, and even fewer met Gatsby face to face

Nick runs into Jordan baker who is even more casually bitter after she has recently lost golf tournament

All around them people gossip about their mysterious host. They speculated that he once killed a man in cold blood or he was a spy for Germany in ww1

They go looking for Gatsby in his mansion but instead they find a grotesque little man” Nick called him owl eyes”

Outside in the garden Nick strikes up a conversation with a handsome , youthful man who looks familiar to him, turns out they served in the same division during the war “it was Gatsby”

He stands aloof from his guests watching the party rather than taking part in it. Gatsby leaves to take a phone call, later sends his butler to ask for Jordan to speak with him

When she finishes talk in got Gatsby she tells Nick she has heard “remarkable news”

Analysis

A

In this chapter Jay Gatsby remains a fundamental a mystery

The man himself stand sin dark contrast to the sinister gossip Nick has heard about him . Gatsby is young and handsome with a beautiful smile that is radiant with hope and optimism

Nick insrptantly falls in love with Gatsby smile remarking is has “a quality of eternal reassurance in it”

Gatsby I hate hopefulness is contagious

The reader knows not everything about Gatsby is mere display, his books are real, and his smile is real
