> 2 years duration
Multiple, recurrent and frequently changing symptoms in absence of physiological explanation
-GI
-sexual/reproductive
-urinary
-neurological
Persistent refusal by patient to accept reassurance
Functional impairment
15-50% of all patients
Often dependent on sedatives and analgesia
