What are the steps of Initial Evaluation of a victim?

A
  • Assess the situation: tactical/non, threats to person rendering First Aid.
  • Keep pt laying down: prevent further injury, calm pt.
  • ID the injury: Tx more sever first
  • Check for consciousness: is pt alert/aware
  • Check breathing: check airway for obstructions
  • Check pulse: weak/rapid/present/absent
  • Check for injuries: SECONDARY sweep for less sever injuries

How do you Tx a Fx of the:

ARM/LEG/JAW/NOSE/SKULL/SPINE/RIB/SHOULDER

A

Arm: splint & secure to the body with a sling
Leg: 2 splints secured with 5 straps
Jaw: pull jaw and tongue forward and secure with 4-tailed bandage
Nose: stop bleeding, head forward, ice
Skull: lay down, direct pressure, raise head slightly, wrap head lightly (to allow for swelling), monitor pt closely
Spine: keep warm, place spine board
Ribs: tape the flail area during exhale all around the chest, strap arm to the side of the chest in needed.
Shoulder: apply a sling, place forearm across the chest with wrist 4” above elbow, palm in and thumb up.
