Unit_015 Flashcards
Voice is the property of a verb which indicates whether the subject is performing the action or is receiving the action. There are two voices: active voice and passive voice.
English Grammar Rule #115
A verb is in the active voice when it represents the subject as performing the action.
English Grammar Rule #116
A verb is in the passive voice when it represents the subject as receiving the action.
English Grammar Rule #117
Only a verb that takes an object (transitive verb) can be changed into the passive voice.
English Grammar Rule #118
The passive voice is formed by combining some form of the verb to be with the past participle of the verb that names the action: Examples: am called, will be elected, have been promoted, was interviewed.
English Grammar Rule #119
Mood indicates the manner in which the action or the state of being is expressed. There are three moods in English: indicative mood, imperative mood, and the subjunctive mood.
English Grammar Rule #120
The indicative mood is used to state a fact or ask a question.
English Grammar Rule #121
The imperative mood is used to express a command or make a request.
English Grammar Rule #122
The subjunctive mood is used to express a wish, doubt, uncertainty, or a condition that is contrary to fact.
English Grammar Rule #123
Although the subjunctive is rapidly passing out of use in informal speaking and writing, certain uses of the subjunctive are still observed by careful speakers and writers.
English Grammar Rule #124
The subjunctive expresses certain distinctions in the meaning which cannot be expressed by the indicative. This is true of the subjunctive of wish, and the subjunctive in a contrary to fact condition. If I was you does not express the same idea as If I were you. You can never be the other person. The subjunctive indicates that fact.
