Voice is the property of a verb which indicates whether the subject is performing the action or is receiving the action. There are two voices: active voice and passive voice.

A verb is in the active voice when it represents the subject as performing the action.

This is true of the subjunctive of wish, and the subjunctive in a contrary to fact condition. If I was you does not express the same idea as If I were you. You can never be the other person. The subjunctive indicates that fact.
