Timeline of Transjordan

A

1922- Britain get it from LoN
1923- police and reserve for combined into the Arab Legion, helping Britain fight against Wahhabi incursions
1923- Britain recognise them as a state preparing for independence; British modernising schemes implemented eg road, education, communication etc
1926- British High commissioner in Palestine created Transjordan frontier force; demonstrated that king Abdullah lacked real independence
1929- Legislative council replaced old exec council
1939- Legislative Council formally became the Emir’s cabinet; Br maintained control though by supporting Transjordan financially and placing British advisors in key positions of influence

Timeline of Palestine

A

1915- Palestinian Arabs beieved that Br promised them independence
1916- Sykes-Picot agreement that Br would take control of Palestine
1917- Balfour Declaration, from Balfour to lord Rothschild, which promised support for the establishment of a national home for Jews
1929/31- following violence, enquires recommended curb on Jewish acquisition of land but pro-Jewish feeling in American and Britain forced government to back down
1936- Britain sent 20k troops in to Palestine to deal with Arab rioting and attacks on Jews
1937- Peels Report, recommending the partioning of Palestine (opposed by the Arabs)
1937-9- 10 arabs hung
1939- Jewish immigration limited to 15k a year for 5 years

Timeline of Iraq

A

1920- British intervene (with airforce) when Muslim demonstrators against British rule turn into full-scale rebellion
1921- Cairo Conference: Britain allowed self-government to Iraq despite retaining British control of foreign affairs
1922- Anglo-Iraqi treaty confirmed Faisal I as king (but British advisors still appointed to most governmental departments and Br controlled military bases and had authority over Iraqi army)
