Q

Sensory memory

A
  • input through sensory register through five senses
  • holds very limited amount of information
  • more of representation is modality specific
  • information held for 2 seconds
  • if information is attended to it will pass to stm

Q

Short term memory

A
  • only lasts 15-30 seconds
  • limited amount of information at a time held between 5 and 9 items
  • rehearsal of information means it will pass to Ltm
  • if not rehearsed it will be lost through decay
  • stores information in auditory way for us to rehearse

Q

Evidence for separate stm and ltm stores

A
  • primary recency effect
  • glanzer and cunitz (1966)
  • investigate whether position of word in list effected recall
  • participants recalled more words from beginning and end of word list

Q

Long term memory

A
  • once information has been rehearsed it passes to ltm
  • can potentially last forever
  • no limit to amount of information held
  • largely held semantically

Q

Evidence for ltm

A

Atkinson and shiffrin

  • quizzing graduate about capital cities in US states
  • student could not immediately recall capital of Washington but later recalled another capital after which he remembered the capital of Washington. Learned capitals together

Q

Evaluation of multi-store model

A

Supporting evidence- glanzer and cunitz
Reductionist- reduces memory down to simple storage and retrieval process suggest memory is a passive process unlike other models
Individual difference- can not be applied to every individual because people can eidetic memories to long term memory, larger capacity in stm
Practical applications- help studies/ those with professions that require large amount of info to be processed
