Cartilage and joints Flashcards

1
Q

Cartilage

A
  • -flexible, resilient connective tissue
  • -composed mostly of collagen
  • -contains no blood vessels or nerves except in its outside membrane

Q

Fibrous joints

A
  • -purpose is to maintain a fixed relationship between two bones
  • -between two bones held closely and tightly by fibrous connective tissue
  • -allows the least movement of any joint type
  • -ex: joint between teeth and mandible, skull bones form fibrous joints w/ each other

Q

Cartilaginous joints

A
  • -allow little movement
  • -occur b/w two bones tightly connected by cartilage
  • -slight flexibility can allow absorption of some energy to protect bones from trauma
  • -ex: joint b/w ribs and sternum, joint b/w pubic symphysis in the pelvis

Q

Synovial joints

A
  • -allow a wide range of movement
  • -bones are not bound directly by the intervening cartilage, but instead are separated by a capsule filled with synovial fluid
  • -ex: shoulder and knee joints

Q

synovial fluid

A
  • -provides lubrication and nourishment to the cartilage in synovial joints
  • -contains phagocytosis cells that can remove microbes and particles
