Weather And Climate Flashcards
Air pressure
The air that composes the atmosphere is made of many different gases. … When gravity acts on the air, the air exerts a force upon the earth called pressure. The typical pressure at sea level is 1013.25 millibars or 14.7 pounds per square inch. A millibar is a unit that is used to report the the atmospheric pressure.
Tropical
pertaining to, characteristic of, occurring in, or inhabiting the tropics, especially the humid tropics:
Celsius
of or denoting a scale of temperature in which water freezes at 0° and boils at 100° under standard conditions.
Cumulus cloud
Cumulus clouds are clouds which have flat bases and are often described as “puffy”, “cotton-like” or “fluffy” in appearance. Their name derives from the Latin cumulo-, meaning heap or pile.
Cirrus cloud
Cirrus is a genus of atmospheric cloud generally characterized by thin, wispy strands, giving the type its name from the Latin word cirrus, meaning a ringlet or curling lock of hair
Thermometer
Definition of thermometer. : an instrument for determining temperature; especially : one consisting of a glass bulb attached to a fine tube of glass with a numbered scale and containing a liquid (such as mercury or colored alcohol) that is sealed in and rises and falls with changes of temperature.
Tropical depression
A tropical cyclone is a rapidly rotating storm system characterized by a low-pressure center, a closed low-level atmospheric circulation, strong winds, and a spiral arrangement of thunderstorms that produce heavy rain. Wikipedia
Ocean current
An ocean current is a seasonal directed movement of sea water generated by forces acting upon this mean flow, such as wind, the Coriolis effect, breaking waves, cabbeling, temperature and salinity
Dew point
the atmospheric temperature (varying according to pressure and humidity) below which water droplets begin to condense and dew can form.
Hurricane
a storm with a violent wind, in particular a tropical cyclone in the Caribbean.
a wind of force 12 on the Beaufort scale (equal to or exceeding 64 knots or 74 mph).
Desert
In geography, a desert is a landscape form or region that receives very little precipitation. Generally deserts are defined as areas that receive an average annual precipitation of less than 250 mm (10 inches). The terminology used to define deserts is complex.
Typhoon
typhoon. ty·phoon. Use typhoon in a sentence. noun. The definition of a typhoon is a tropical cyclone with winds faster than 74 miles per hour that occurs in the North Atlantic Ocean, the Northeast Pacific Ocean east of the dateline, the South Pacific east of 160E and the Northwest Pacific Ocean west of the date line.
Humidity
atmospheric moisture.
Forecast
Weather forecasting is the application of science and technology to predict the conditions of the atmosphere for a given location and time. Human beings have attempted to predict the weather informally for millennia and formally since the 19th century. … There are a variety of end uses to weather forecasts.
Atmosphere
the envelope of gases surrounding the earth or another planet.
