Why did HM Need surgery in the first place
He suffered from bad epilepsy
What did the surgery involve
Removing his hippocampus
How was his memory effected
Still remembered memories before the operation but could no longer make them
What tests were done on HM
Tests like tracing the outline of a star from looking into a mirror
What did they show ?
He could remember how to do it ( procedural memory ) but can’t remember doing it
What conclusions can we make about long term memory?
Overall there are 2 types of memory procedures
Strengths
Permitting investigation or otherwise impractical or unethical situations
Provided insights for further research
Weaknesses
Can’t generalise because it was just one person
Researchers own subjective feeling may influence the case study
