A

It gave cash and carry arms to Britain. It provided military support and money to Britain. They provided equipment like guns, medical care, bombs and arms.

Both Britain and Russia were supported by America and the Lend Lease Act.

  • by 1944 America was making 1/2 the worlds weapons.
  • this was because industries cooperated fully with him.
  • Roosevelt in 1942 set up the War Production Board with industrialists in order to meet war production needs.
  • around 80% of American contracts went to 100 firms, which were sub contracted to supply tools, materials and equipment.
  • large firms wanted to help the war effort but stood to make a lot of money out of it.

  • the war effort ended unemployment (something Roosevelt’s New Deal failed at)
  • demand for workers increased and so did wages.
  • 300,000 women joined the armed forces and another 7 million joined the work force.

  • Coca-Cola became a multi national company due to WW2. (Created moe jobs)-they followed troops around the world.
  • 4 million people moved South - North to work in factories.

What was the effect of the Lend Lease during WW2 on Americans?

A
  • many American invested in their incomes in bonds.
  • this meant they effectively leant money to the government by buying war bonds with the promise that the bonds would be payed back with interest at the end of the war.
  • during the course of the war Americans contributed $129 billion to the war effort by buying bonds. This gave the government money to spend on war time production.

New deal:

  • created million’s of new jobs.
  • agencies/acts provided work for a variety of people to create roads and other stuff.
  • however by 1961 there were still 6 million unemployed.

WW2

  • 0.75 million African Americans got jobs in factories.
  • 4 million people moved from the south-north to work in factories.
  • 1/2 a million new businesses started up creating jobs.

  • they lived in ghettos. These places were dangerous and unsafe.
  • lowest paid jobs (in the south they worked as farmers and in the north worked in factories)
  • they were paid less than white people even if they had the same job.
  • ghettos were for people who could not afford houses.
  • lynching was still legal in 1930s.
  • they were segregated. So there were different schools, toilets, restaurants for black people.

  • over 1 million African American soldiers joined or were constricted in the army. Many of them were limited to menial tasks such as cooks but were working along side white Americans.
  • many African Americans soldiers who were stationed in Britain were going into restaurants and bars with white people.
  • the US Supreme commander general Eisenhower, supported integrated combat units. By the end of 1944 black soldiers were fighting in these units and there were hundreds of black officers in the army and marines.

Examples of negative social improvement for African Americans?

  • sometimes there was tension in Britain when African Americans went out with white girls.
  • discrimination was worst in the Navy with black soldiers being given the most dangerous jobs of loading ammunition onto ships bound for war zones. In 1944 and awful accident saw the death of 323 people - most of them black.
  • expectations changed after the war. Membership on the National Association for the Advancement of coloured people (NAACP) rose from nearly 50,000 to nearly 1/2 million. African Americans were expecting social change after the war while some white people were expecting things to go to normal but there were going to be problems after the war.

  • 1 in 3 aircraft workers were women. Women were often given welding jobs in awkward parts of the plane because they were smaller and more agile.
  • in the munitions and electronic industries 1/2 the workers were women.
  • in a government survey 60% of plant managers said women were the best workers.
  • many women in these jobs were earning higher wages than they had before the war . Many were not willing to back to their lives before the war.
  • the percentage of married women who worked went up from 35% to 50% 1941-1945
  • 4 US states made equal pay for women compulsory while other states tried to protect women from discrimination from their jobs.

  • black women who serve in the armed forces as nurses and only allowed to treat black soldiers. When black soldiers were injured only blood from black soldiers could be used in their treatments.
  • returning soldiers often expected their wives to return to their domestic roles once the war ended. Society experienced tension in the years after 1945.
  • many men still held prejudices against women working in well paid jobs. Especially married women. On the average women earned to 50-60% less than men doing the same jobs and women could still be dismissed from their jobs when they married.
