A
- Mating of related individuals (that are more closely related than average for the population)
- Increases homozygosity

What is meant be inbreeding depression?
A
-Manifestation of poor gene combinations can significantly decrease performance

Describe what is meant by genes identical by descent
A
-Common ancestor with desirable genes-> its descendants have copy of the same gene. If these descendants mate then offspring may inherit two alleles of a single gene by descent due to common ancestor of the parents.

What is the inbreeding coefficient?
A
The measure of the level of inbreeding in an individual. i.e. the PROBABILITY that both alleles at a single locus are identical by descent.

What does the BVA/KC/ISDS scheme dog?
A
- Used to screen dogs for inherited eye conditions- these are all single gene mutations
- Identifies clinically affected dogs (these are homozygous)
- Cannot detect carriers!!
