Q

How do hydrogen powered vehicles work?

How is the reaction started?

A

Energy is released from the reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. The reaction must start with energy from a flame or a spark.

Q

What is the law of conservation of mass?

A

The locom states that mass is never gained or lost during a chemical reaction. No new atoms are created or lost they are simply rearranged to form new substances.

Q

What’s phlogiston?

A

Phlogiston was a theory that stated: substances contained something called phlogiston that when burned it would escape into the air, explaining why nothing is left behind. However it was proved wrong when scientists measured masses of gases.

Q

What should you do to put out burning oil?

A

To put out burning oil, you should use a foam or a fire blanket to keep oxygen away from the fuel. Water should not be used because it would sink in to the oil, turn into steam and spread the fire.

Q

What would you do to put out an electric fire?

A

With an electric fire you, firstly you should turn off the mains. Later to put out the flames you should put carbon dioxide on the flames because it is heavier than the air which would push the oxygen away and stop the fire. If water was used you could get a serious electric shock
