Who you are speaking to.
Why you are speaking to them.
What are key questions you should ask yourself when preparing for speaking and listening?
Who audience is. Age of audience. What matters to audience. What want audience to do or feel. Why should audience listen to you.
How might you best speak to your audience in an interesting way?
Be clear about purpose in presentations + discussions.
Is aim:
To persuade audience to do something.
To convince listeners that your point of view is fair 1 to hold.
To entertain audience.
To share essential information.
To give instructions e.g. for a recipe.
What are discussion skills?
Making eye contact with speaker + responding to what they say.
Using body language to show co-operation + understanding, e.g. shrugs + nods.
Building on what others say.
Challenging points made by others.
What should you try to avoid doing in a group discussion?
Interruption.
Cutting people off mid-sentence.
Talking over others.
Breaking off into mini-conversations within big group.
What should you aim to be?
Polite.
Positive.
Balanced.
What is presenting about?
Communicating information + choosing style suited to meet needs of specific audience.
What should you ask yourself when preparing a presentation?
What is presentation about? Who are you talking to? Why have you chosen this topic? What is important about this topic? Why should your audience listen?
What is important in a role-play?
Facial expressions. Voice. Movement. Gesture. Posture.
What should you think about when preparing for a character role-play?
What is character’s circumstance or story? What happened to them in past + how do they feel now?
What is their relationship to each of other characters in the role-play?
What do they want from the situation?
