Intermolecular Forces Flashcards

1
Q

Dipole dipole

A

When two polar encounter each other, the positive side of the one is attracted to the negative side of the other one. These interactions decrease rapidly as distance between molecules grow,

Q

Dipole induced dipoles

A

Oxygen dissolves in water to a very small extent. Dipole induced dipole occurs when a polar molecule is brought close to a non-polar molecule. The negative side of the dipole repels the electrons in the non-polar molecule, making it polar. It is called polarization. The more electrons a molecule has, the more easily electrons can be polarized.

Q

Instantaneous dipole (London forces)

A

Occurs between two non-polar molecule. When the lecterns find themselves on the same side of each molecule, it formats a temporary dipole. This allows them to attract.
