Experimental design Flashcards

1
Q

Independent groups

A
  • two different groups have 2 different conditions
  • if there are 2 levels of the IV, each group only experiences one of them
  • there will be an experimental and control condition and them the means of the are compared (although not directly)

Q

repeated measures

A
  • all participants experience both conditions
each participant would try both the experimental and control conditions
  • the means are then more directly compared

Q

matched pairs

A
  • participants paired together based on similar characteristics/ variables
  • control confounding variables of participant variables

(done because in repeated measures people become wise to the aims)

Q

Independent groups evaluation

A
  • more likely you’re testing individual difference rather than the dependant and independent variable
+ this is dealt with by using random allocation
+ order effects aren’t a problem and they aren’t likely to get the aim

Q

repeated measures evaluation

A
  • everyone has to do at least 2 task and the order may be significant (e.g if they’re drinking energy drinks they have to do this second)
+ this is helped by counterbalancing
  • order effects also arise because of boredom and fatigue
(order acts as a confounding variable)
  • demand characteristics more likely
+ participant variables are controlled so fewer participants needed

Q

matched pairs evaluation

A

+ demand characteristics less likely because there’s only one condition

  • although there attempt of participant variable reduction, people can never be matched perfectly
  • matching sometimes time-consuming and expensive, especially if pre-test is required
