Scientific Method Flashcards
problem statement
(1) observation & identification of the problem
identification of the variables
(2) information gathering
variable that does not change throughout the experiment
constant
variable manipulated by the scientist
independent
variable that changes upon the manipulation of the independent variable
dependent
untouched variable used as comparison to see the effects of the environment
controlled
process of creating an idea that is not yet proven but leads to further discussion
(3) formulation of hypothesis
hypothesis which the researcher tries to disprove, reject or nullify the idea
null hypothesis
hypothesis that show that sample observations are influenced by a non-random cause & supports the idea
alternative hypothesis
experimentation
(4) hypothesis testing
process of analysing the data recovered from the experiment
(5) data gathering & analysis of results
data in which the situations are described (qualitative data)
descriptive data
data in which there is emphasis on objective measurements and numerical analysis of data (quantitative data)
numerical data
summary of results & addressing the statement of the problem and hypothesis
(6) formulating conclusion
