define mental health *
a state of emotional and social wellbeing in which individuals realise their own abilities, can cope with the normal stressors of life, can work productively and contribute to their community
define mental illness
a mental disorder that affects one or more functions of the mind. a mental illness can interfere with a persons thoughts emotions perceptions and behaviours
how is mental illness diagnosed
with the DSM; The diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders. mostly it will be noticed by people closest to you
Rosenhan study 1973
8 psychologically ‘normal’ people stated that they heard voices. all 8 admitted to hospital with 7 diagnosed with schizophrenia and the other with bipolar. once admitted stopped complaining of voices. stayed between 7-52 days. caused great concern because they were all admitted with minimal symptoms and it showed the issues around diagnosis

physical illness/disability, locus of control (internal), IQ, confidence, genetics, self image, personality
external factors involved in mental health
school, financial status, stress, past experiences, neglect social environment, friends
schizophrenia as a general illness
a psychotic disorder meaning it brings a loss of contact with reality, it inclines severe disturbances in thinking, emotions and behaviour. generally late teens early 20s. symptoms are delusions (greater power, think they are being spied on), hallucinations (visual, auditory, smell), paranoia, disorganised speech, social withdrawal
biopsychosocial framework
biological e.g genetic predisposition, IQ
psychological e.g personality traits, self esteem
social e.g family circumstances, bullying/abuse
adaptive behaviour
age appropriate everyday living skills that can be as basic as walking, talking ect. essentially skills that develop through experience, help adjust to our environment, relate to others and become independent adults. factors that help us cope and adapt include; personality predisposition, resilience and secure attachment

the situational approach to normality
how we behave in specific situations when it is appropriate to do certain things e.g laugh, cry, yell ect. as we get older we are expected to be able to identify these. links with cultural approach
societal and cultural approach to normality
within a society, the rules and regulations to follow and is linked to ethnic and cultural background. Effects how we dress, act and what we eat e.g eye contact, good in Aus bad in japan
