Science Test: Atomic structure Flashcards
What is an element?
A substance made up of one type of atom e.g. H2, O2
What is a compound?
A substance made up of two or more different atoms bonded together e.g. Co2, Ca (Oh)2
What is a mixture?
A substance made by mixing other substances together. More then one substance mixed together, no chemical formula e.g. Air, mud
What is a molecule?
When two or more non-metal atoms are bonded together e.g. Ca (Oh)2, O2, H2
What is pure?
Only contains one/that substance e.g. water
What is an atom?
They are the smallest particle, they are everywhere. Protons, neutron and electron make up atoms
What is the proton, neutron, electron charge?
- proton: positive +
- neutron: neutral
- electron: negative -
What is the relative mass of Protons, neutrons and electrons?
- Proton: 1
- Neutron: 1
- Electron: 1 over 2000
Where is protons, neutrons and electron formed in the atom?
- Proton: nucleus
- Neutron: nucleus
- Electron: electron cloud
What does Mass =
Number of protons + electrons
What does atomic number = ?
Number of protons in the nucleus
Note:
Round mass to nearest whole number
Neutrons =
Mass - atomic number
What are properties of non metal
- Poor thermal conductors
- Poor electrical conductors
- Brittle solids- not malleable or ductile
- little or no metallic luster
- gain electrons easily
- dull, not shiny, can be colourful
What are properties of metals
- can conduct electricity
- they are malleable
- they are luster
- high melting and boiling point
