Chapter 1 Flashcards
Why is the scope of chemistry so vast?
Chemistry affects all aspects of life and most natural events because all living and non living are made of matter.
What is matter?
Matter is stuff that occupies space.
Chemistry is known as the central science, why?
Because it is fundamental to the understanding of the other sciences
What are the five areas of study in chemistry
Organic chemistry Inorganic chemistry Biochemistry Analytic chemistry Physical chemistry
Define organic chemistry
The studies of chemicals containing carbon
Inorganic chemistry
The study of chemicals not containing carbon
Biochemistry
The study of processes that take place in a living organism. Bio means life
Analytical chemistry
The area of chemistry that focuses on the composition of matter
Physical chemistry
The area that deals with the mechanism rate and energy transfer that occurs when matter undergoes a change. Physics applied to chemistry
What are the two broad areas of chemistry?
What are the defined as?
Pure chemistry, applied chemistry
Pure chemistry is chemistry designed to answer questions
Applied chemistry is existing knowledge used to make applications.
What are the eight big ideas of chemistry
Chemistry is the central science Electrons and the structure of atoms Bonding with interactions Reactions Kinetic theory The mole and quantifying matter Matter and energy Carbon chemistry
How are the types of products obtained in a chemical reaction determined?
How the electrons react
What are compounds?
The collection of two or more elements held together by strong attractive forces called bonds
What is the mole in chemistry
A unit used in chemistry that defines the amount of a material.
How many carbon containing compounds are there?
Ten million
