Chapter 2 Flashcards
Matter
Which is anything that occupies space and has mass
Mass
The amount of matter in an object
Weight
Gravitational force acting on an object of a given mass
Element
The simplest type of matter having unique chemical properties
Atom
Is the smallest particle of an element that has the chemical characteristics of that element
Neutron
Has no electrical charge
Proton
Has one positive charge
Electron
Has one negative charge
Nucleus
Protons and neutrons form here this is at the center of an Atom
Isotopes
Are two or more forms of the same element that have the same number of protons and electrons different number of neutrons
Same atomic number different atomic mass
Atomic mass
The average mass of it’s naturally occurring isotopes
Chemical bonds
First level is the concept of how atoms interact to form molecules by sharing in transferring their out most electrons
Chemical behavior
An atom is dependent on its electrons
Electron shells
Energy levels are often depicted as concentric rings around the nucleus
Valance shell
Outer most shell
