16
Q

convergent boundary (1 of the Plate Tectonics words as well)

A

An area where two tectonic plates collide

17
Q

covalent bond

A

A chemical bond in which an electron is shared by two atoms to fulfill their outermost energy levels

18
Q

crest

A

The highest point of a wave

19
Q

crust

A

The outermost layer of Earth (is over the mantle)

20
Q

decomposer

A

An organism that obtains nutrients by breaking down the organic matter of passed away organisms

21
Q

density

A

The concentration of matter within a certain volume or in an object

22
Q

dependent variable

A

The factor being measured in an experiment.

Is as result of the independent variable that you control

23
Q

deposition

A

The layering of matter, such as sediments, occurring naturally

These sediments are carried by wind, water etc and left where they may deposit upon eachother

24
Q

diffraction

A

The bending of a wave as result of an obstruction

25
Q

DNA

A

A nucleic acid carrying genetic material, code, existent in all cellular organisms

26
Q

dominance

A

The tendency of a dominant allele to mask the appearance of the related recessive gene

27
Q

**plate tectonics words** subduction

A

The process in which two tectonic plates collide on a convergent boundary, where the weaker plate slips **under **the stronger one, into the mantle.

This results in volcanic activity and earthquakes.

This may occur with two continental plates, where as the weaker slides under, or an oceanic and continental plate (the oceanic plate slides under)

28
Q

divergent boundary

A

An area where two tectonic plates diverge from each other

29
Q

rift valley

A

A valley landmark that occurs at a divergent boundary; when the two tectonic plates move away from each other they result in a depression in the landscape

30
Q

mid-ocean ridge

A

An underwater mountain range forming along a rift that occurs at a divergent boundary
