- includes the peripheral portions of the sensory and voluntary movements
- part of the PNS that transmits commands for voluntary movements from the CNS to the muscles and brings sensory input back to the CNS for further processing
- functions are carried out by 31 pairs of spinal nerves (serves torso and limbs) and 12 pairs of cranial nerves (serves the head, neck and some internal organs)
