Solution and suspension Flashcards
fully understand
What is a mixture
Mixtures are physically combined structures that can be separated into their original components. ( Basically, the substance can become even smaller)
What is a solute
that is being dissolved in the solvent (eg.sugar, salt)
What is a solvent
dissolves solute (eg: water)
example of solute
sugar, salt
example of solvent
water
What is a homogeneous solution
same proportions of its components throughout any given sample
What is a heterogeneous mixture
different proportion in its components
Examples of homogenous solution
Gas in Gas Liquid in Liquid Solid in Liquid Liquid in Gas Solid in Solid
air what vinegar in milk (not needed) sea water (salt and water) mist alloys ( 2 metals mixed)
What is a suspension
a mix of 2 or more heterogeneous substance)
Residue found
Difference in solution and suspension
solution: cannot be separated through filter
composition uniform throughout
transparent
Suspension: solid sink to bottom
can be separated through filtration
opaque
factors that affect solubility
2 Factors
nature of solute and solvent
tempreature
factors affecting rate of dissolving
heat
surface area
stirring
volume of solvent
What is a solution
A solution is a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances.
