DYSFUNCTIONAL family is characterised by an unhealthy environment that is not conducive for the development of the family members. Some or all of the needs of the family are not being met in a dysfunctional family

A
- High conflict among family members accompanied by an atmosphere that is hostile and critical.
- Lack of family activities and happy times together.
- Discouragement and disappointment among family
members concerning relationships within the family. - A lack of open and “safe” communication
- Gender bias (i.e.: “men’s” work, “women’s” work)
- Prevalence of family violence
- Lack of trust and affection among family members.
- Lack of accountability towards family members and family responsibilities.
- Common use of “blame” and “guilt” during interaction.
