Chromebook: Google Drive vs Files app

A

This is my understanding:
Google Drive shows what is on the Google Drive cloud.

Files app, like File Manager or File Explorer, shows what is on the Chromebook hard drive, but in addition, has a directory to what is on the Google Drive.

Q

What is the Offline folder in the files app?

A

Offline folder in Files app are files that can be used offline without an internet connection. These will be synced when you reconnect to the internet. Here is where it gets tricky. This directory does not actually hold files; instead it has pointers that point to the files somewhere on the Chromebook hard drive. I think they do it this way in order to minimize the use of hard drive space. The files are stored as a string of data in some cache location.

Q

What is the Downloads folder in the files app?

A

Downloads in Files app is an actually directory holding files on the CB hard drive. This is sometimes considered to be temporary storage which can get wiped out, so store documents on the cloud when possible or in an external device like an SD card or a USB drive.

Q

How to change the location of your default downloads folder on your Google Drive.

A
  1. Google drive > New > folder > “My Drive Downloads”
  2. My picture (lower right) > Settings > show advanced settings > Downloads, Download Location > change > select My Drive Downloads (under Google Drive) > open

Now anything I download will be downloaded into the My Drive Downloads folder

Advantage – stored on Google Drive, not locally on Chromebook

Q

Powerwash vs Reset vs Full Reset

A

RESET: When resetting your Chrome settings to default, you restore your browser settings. This means the ‘New tab’ page, search engines and pinned tabs will be reset. All extensions will be switched off and all temporary data (such as cookies) will be erased. Your bookmarks, browser history and saved passwords won’t be cleared.

PowerWash: When you PowerWash your Chromebook, you reset your Chromebook to factory settings. This means all data of your hard drive will be erased, also the files in the “downloads” folder and all accounts on your Chromebook. After a PowerWash, all setting have to be re-installed, also the owner account.

A

File > New > Document. From the new document: Menu (upper left, 3 horizontal lines) > Drive.

18
Q

What does change and what does not change after a Powerwash Reset?

A

What is Lost:

  1. ..Touchpad and/or Touchscreen settings are reset.
  2. .All files under local storage in Files/Downloads was deleted.

What is not changed:

  1. ..No changes to Google Drive, of course. I had changed the downfolds default folder to Google Drive > “My Drive Downloads”. This was unchanged after PowerWash.
  2. .cache (or internet search history) is not lost

I don’t know:
…….Are apps lost? Keep track of what apps I have so I can re-install them if they are lost.

21
Q

How to Add an icon to go to a website

A

https://www.laptopmag.com/articles/how-to-create-desktop-shortcuts-for-web-pages-using-chrome

Open web site > 3-dot menu > Create Shortcut… > gives a name > Create. This puts an icon in the toolbar at the bottom of the Chrome window and in the app list. You can unpin the icon in the toolbar and still leave the app in the app list.

It’s worth pointing out that pages opened using shortcuts are stripped of the traditional navigation tools including a browser bar.

25
Q

How to move files in Google Drive to your Chromebook PC

A

The reason this cannot be done directly is because the file is on the cloud, not stored locally, but on the internet. So Drag & Drop or Copy & Paste will not work. The file has to be downloaded to your PC.

Use Library WiFi (or other WiFi) to download large files for speed and to avoid data usage.

26
Q

How much free storage is allowed on Google Drive?
What counts against this Quota?
How to free up Google Drive space.

A

15 GB free storage on Google Drive.

Gmail, Trash folder, and PDF files count against quota; Google docs, photos (if < 16 megapixels or let Google shrink to 16 megapixels) do not count

https://www.cnet.com/how-to/how-to-free-up-google-drive-space/

To find out what’s taking up so much space on your Google Drive, go to Google’s Drive storage page. Here, you’ll see a pie chart that shows you how much space you’re taking up; roll over the chart to see a breakdown by platform.

27
Q

PDF files count against your quota on Google Drive. What can you do about it?

A

If you have PDF files that you’d rather not delete, you can save them and free up space by converting them to Google Docs (or Sheets or Slides, depending on the file). To do this, right-click on the PDF file, hover over Open with, and choose Google Docs from the drop-down menu
