Development Flashcards
How many kidneys form sequentially in the embryo?
3
The disappearance of one marks the onset of the next developmental phase
Where does the first kidney (pronephros) form?
Cervical region
Does the pronephros function in humans?
No but it does in some other animals.
The point of the pronephros is the formation of it’s duct which descends through the abdomen to form the mesonephros
What is the urogenital ridge?
Region of intermediate mesoderm giving rise to both the embryonic kidney and the gonad
Where do the mesonephric tubules form?
Caudal to pronephric region
What forms the embryonic kidney?
Mesonephric tubules and mesonephric duct
What does the mesonephric duct form?
Uteric bud
What does the uteric bud do?
Induces the formation of the definitive kidney
It contacts the mesonephric blastsoma and expands and branches forming the pelvis of the kidney
What is the excretory component of the kidney formed from?
Intermediate mesoderm under the influence of uteric bud
Where does the metanephric kidney first appear?
Pelvic region
What is the uteric bud?
Undifferentiated intermediate mesoderm caudal to the mesonephros
