Q

Why was it the case that in Becker’s study in(1971) the middle class were seen as the ideal?

A

They are most likely not to have a language barrier, so speak in the elaborated code or conduct and appearance influencing decisions because of this teachers would label them positively and provide better teaching.

Q

Can you name 2 problems of the experiment of Rosenthal and Jacobson (1968)?

11
Q

What does Margaret Fuller study say about labeling?

A

This shows that the labelling theory is to determinstic, by being assigned a negative label, it doesn’t mean you will inevitably fufil that label. Having that negative label can have a positive effect on teachers to prove teachers wrong.

Q

What is the A-C economy?

A

18
Q

What did Gillbourne and Youdell (2001) study?

A

They found out in 2 secondary schools teachers use stereotypical notions to stream pupils. They found that working class a seen to have less ability so are placed in lower stream.

19
Q

Why is it hard for Working class pupils to move up a stream?

A

As teachers have low expectations of them, they are locked in their stream, as Becker says ‘they get the message’ so live up to expectations and underachieve.

20
Q

Why would Middle class benefit from streaming?

22
Q

What is Educational triage?

A

This is when schools sort pupils into 3 catogries ‘hopeless cases’, ‘those with potential’, ‘those who will pass anyway’. The working class and black are likely to be put in hopeless cases leading to SFP and failure.

23
Q

What does Educational triage mean for Working class and blacks?

A

Schools will ignore and spend less time on them.

24
Q

What is an AO3 evaluation point for streaming?

A

The Government have introduced Progress 8, which measures progress made against 8 GCSE’s.

25
Q

In the past how did the government measure progress?

A

They measured progress by seeing how many A*’s to Cs students got in Gcse’s

26
Q

How does Progress 8 give WC an advantage?

A

Governments have to allcoate more money to schools with a low % progress in order to improve progress, this means that schools are to focus more attention and time to low achieving pupils to improve progress 8, to have a high league school position.

27
Q

What is a Pupil subculture?

A

A group of pupils who share similar values and behavior patterns. Pupil subcultures often emerge as a response to labeling/streaming.

28
Q

What is the sociologist that uses the concepts of differentiation and polarization to explain how pupil subcultures emerge?

A

Colin lacey (1970)

29
Q

What Differentiation?

A

Process of teachers categorizing pupils according to how they perceive their ability and treating them accordingly ie streaming.

30
Q

What is polarization?

A

Students responses to differentiation by moving either end of the opposite poles in terms of behavior and attitude.

31
Q

What is a pro-school subculture?

A

These are usually high stream pupils who are more committed to values of school. Status gained through educational success. Their values correspond to those of the school.

32
Q

What is an anti-school subculture?

A

These are usually low stream pupil, they have a loss of self-esteem, they go against school values, such as hard work. They gain statues through their peers, e.g
not doing homework.

33
Q

Give 2 criticisms of the labeling theory?

A

1) It is deterministic Fuller (1984) shows this is not true.
2) Marxists argue that labels aren’t merely a result of teachers’ individual prejudices, but stem from the fact teachers work in a system that reproduces class divisions.

34
Q

What was the sociologists that identified different pupil sub-cultural responses?

A

Peter woods(1979)

35
Q

What are the 4 responses that Peter woods identify in (1979)?

A

Ingratiation
Ritualism
Retreatism
Rebellion

36
Q

What is Ingratiation?

A

Being a teachers pet

37
Q

What is Ritualism?

A

Going through the motions and staying out of trouble.

38
Q

What is Retreatism?

A

daydreaming and mucking about

39
Q

What is Rebellion?

A

outright rejection of everything the school stands for.

40
Q

What is Habitus by bourdieu?

A

The framework of thinking amongst a group. It includes behaviour, thinking, interest and attitudes.

41
Q

Why does a Habitus of Middle class gear them to educational success?

A

The education system has a middle class habitus which gives middle class pupils an advantage whilst working class culture is regarded as inferior.

42
Q

How is the education system geared towards middle class habitus and not the working class habitus?

A

Mc class speak with elaborated code and conduct themselves well.

43
Q

What is Symbolic capital?

A

Pupils who have been socialised at home into MC tastes & preferences gain “symbolic capital” or status & recognized by the school to have worth and value.

44
Q

What is Symbolic violence

A

Pupils who have not been socialized at home into MC taste, this is working class, there tastes is seen as inferior and the Working class habitus is seen as inferior.

45
Q

What would the working class habitus see the MC habitus as?

A

They will see this as unnatural

46
Q

What did Louis Archer found out about habitus?

A

WC pupils feel that to be educationally successful, they’d have to change how they talked & presented themselves. So educational success for them is often experienced as a process of “losing yourself.”

47
Q

What is the study of Nike identities?

A

Many pupils conscious that school/society looks down on them. Symbolic violence led them to seek alternative ways of creating self-worth. To do so, they invested heavily in “styles”e.g. branded clothing like Nike. Was a way of “being me” and if you didn’t conform it was “social suicide.” The right appearance earned symbolic capital and approval from peers brought safety from bullying.

48
Q

What else does Louis Archer argue about MC and WC habitus?

A

MC habitus stigmatises WC identities, they are only trying to gain recognition, while MC see their “Nike” identities as tasteless, to the young people they’re a means of generating symbolic capital and self-worth.

49
Q

What are the 2 ways WC styles leads to the rejection of higher education?

A

They see it as:

1) Unrealistic (not for them)
2) Undesirable (doesn’t suit preferred habitus)

50
Q

What was the study Nicola Ingram (2009)?

A

2 groups of WC catholic boys in a deprived area, one got into the grammar school, the other group didn’t the Grammar school had a strong MC habitus. The group of WC boys had a bulit there habitus from there area, which was totally different. The boys were in immense pressure to fit in. e.g Callum was laughed at for wearing a tracksuit in non-school uniform day.

51
Q

What does the study of Nicola Ingram show?

A

This shows that Working class pupils do succeed. Also this is an example of symbolic violence, pupils are forced to abandon their ‘worthless’ WC identity, for success.

52
Q

Give 2 examples on how Internal and External factors are interrelated.

A

1) WC use restricted code (external cultural) and may be labelled as less able leading to SFP (internal).
2) Poverty (external material) may lead to bullying/stigmatization (internal).

53
Q

What would be your 2 points for your question ‘Applying material from Item A, analyse two reasons why some pupils join subcultures’ ( 10 marks)?

A

1) Streaming - linked to anti- school subcultures

2) Labeling - linked to pro - school subcultures
