Control of Metabolic Pathways Flashcards

1
Q

what is meant by induced fit

A

when a substrate binds to an enzyme, the active site of an changes shape slightly to fit more closely to the substrate

Q

describe and explain the effect of competitive inhibitors on enzymes

A

competitive inhibitors compete with the substrate for the active site of an enzyme. they decrease enzyme activity as substrates cannot bind to an enzyme when a competitive inhibitor prevents it

Q

describe and explain the effect of non-competitive inhibitors on enzymes

A

non-competitive inhibitors bind to the allosteric site of enzymes. this changes the shape of the enzyme and thus the shape of the active site meaning the substrate can no longer fit the active site of the enzyme

Q

describe and explain the effect of feedback inhibitors on enzymes

A

feedback inhibition is when the end product of a metabolic pathway binds to an enzyme earlier in the pathway. this stops the metabolic pathway and so prevents further synthesis of the end product until the end product concentration decreases
