Beneficence
demonstrate a concern for safety and well-being of clients; be timely in eval; don’t use outdated assessments or tx; work within your level of competence; be evidence-based when possible; be sure that others know about the code of ethics and report unethical behavior
Nonmaleficence
refrain from actions that cause harm; make effort for continuity of services; don’t exploit clients, students, etc; maintain professional boundaries; don’t exploit clients for personal/professional gain; avoid bartering services
Autonomy and confidentiality
respect the right of client to self-determination; establish collaborative relationship with clients/families/caregivers; obtain consent before tx; informed consent for research; confidentiality and HIPAA; try your best to communicate and have client comprehend you
Social justice
provide services in a fair and equitable manner; educate the public about value of OT in promoting health and reducing disability; advocate for fair treatment of all patients; consider doing pro bono OT
Procedural justice
comply with institutional rules, local, state, federal, and international laws and AOTA docs; know institutional rules and try to resolve ethical conflicts within them; know laws; have the right credentials; continue your competence through professional development; use funds for intended purposes; collect fees legally and be fair
Veracity
provide comprehensive, accurate, and objective info when representing the profession; represent your credentials, experience, competence, and views accurately; record info related to professional activities timely and within regulations; truthful marketing; be accurate in all reporting; don’t plagarize
Fidelity
treat colleagues and other professionals with respect, fairness, discretion, and integrity; avoid conflicts of interest in employment, volunteering, and research; use conflict resolution; safeguard private info about colleagues and students.
