  • Form of Haemolytic Anaemia
  • Hereditary disorder of haemoglobin synthesis.
  • Usually in SE Asian, Mediterranean, and
    Indian populations.

Radiol Fx.

A
  • Osteoporosis with “honeycomb” coarse trabecular patterns.
  • Generalised cortical thinning and enlarged vascular channels.
  • Involves entire skeleton in infants and children.
  • Can see Hair on end radiating new bone spicules (d/t marrow hyperplasia)
  • vertebral bodies & neural arches showing osteopoenia with thinned cortices and coarsened vertical trabecular patterns (needs to be described as ‘accentuation’ of trabecular patterns. )
  • Cardiomegaly (normal = 1/2 width of chest space)
    • Also splenomegaly / hepatomegaly
