Vocab 9 Flashcards
ebullient
More than chipper, more than happy, more than delighted is ebullient — meaning overcome with joy and delight.
EXAMPLE: The class became ebullient when the teacher announced that they would not have homework for the remainder of the year; they could barely contain their excitement!
elucidate
to make clear and more comprehensible; to clarify;
EXAMPLE: The teacher elucidated her expectations by giving the students a rubric with all of the grading guidelines
emphatic
spoken clear and directly, with force;
EXAMPLE: Kim’s mother was emphatic when she told her that she would not a car for her sixteenth birthday if she did not pull her grades up; therefore, she committed herself to getting better grades.
ephemeral
fleeting or short-lived;
EXAMPLE: John was not like other teenagers; he wasn’t looking for an ephemeral relationship; he wanted a connection that would last a lifetime.
equivocate
to be evasive, to be deliberately ambiguous/unclear;
EXAMPLE: When the reporter asked a controversial question, the senator started equivocating because he knew that his supporters would not like his answer, so he gave a response that really didn’t answer the question.
