What is informed consent
-informing participants of the aims of the investigation so they are fully aware
How should informed consent be dealt with
- must avoid demand characteristics
- presumptive consent
- prior general consent - saying there might be the risk of misinformation
What is deception
-when information could be misleading
How should deception be dealt with
-a debreif - telling them everything about the procedure and support
What does it mean by the right to withdraw
-Must be made aware that they can at any time
What does it mean by protecting the participants from harm
-The researchers are responsible to protect them from both physical and psychological harm
How should protection be dealt with
-Not exposing them to stress
What is confidentiality
-Protecting personal information and should be anonymous too
What is privacy
Must be respected during an observation especially if there’s no consent.
Local cultural values should be considered
What should be in a consent form
- the purpose
- details of what they’ll be required to do
- time
- right to withdraw
- reassurance about protection and confidentiality
- contact details
What should be in a debreif
- full purpose/conditions
- help and therapy
- explain that their behaviour isn’t abnormal
- reassurance about confidentiality
