7.3 Measurig The Process Flashcards
(9 cards)
1
Q
How do you measure breathing ?
A
Using an spirometer
2
Q
What does vital volume means?
A
The volume of air in each breath
3
Q
What does vital capacity mean?
A
The maximum volume of air that can be breathed in or out
4
Q
What does breathing rate means ?
A
How many breaths are taken ( usually in a min )
5
Q
What does oxygen consumption or oxygen uptake ?
A
The rate at which organisms uses up oxygen
6
Q
How does an spirometer work ?
A
- person breathes through a tube connected to the oxygen chamber .
- as the person breathes in and out , the lid of the chamber moves up and down .
- recorded by the pen attached to the lid
- this writes on a rotating drum , creating a spirometer trace .
- The soda lime attached to the tube where person is breathing out absorbs the carbon dioxide .
7
Q
Units for tidal volume , and how to calculate
A
- dm^3
- the height of one breath
8
Q
Units for vital capacity , how ro calculate
A
- dm^3
- the height of max and min breathing
9
Q
Units for oxygen consumption , and how to calculate
A
- dm^3/min
- taking the average slope of the trace
