7.3 metabolism pre-vocab Flashcards
early notes about metabolism and stuff !! (9 cards)
Anabolic Reactions
MAKING larger molecules out of smaller ones.
ex. dehydration synthesis or monomers to polymers
Catabolic Reactions
BREAKING DOWN larger molecules into smaller ones.
ex. hydrolisis
What are some things that ceels do with the energy released when ATP is broken down into ADP?
- Perform chemical reactions w/ enzymes
- Transport power across the cell membrane
- Mechianical work/movement
Exergonic reactions
When energy is EXERTED/lost.
(Digesting energy = less organization = lower energy)
Endergonic reactions
When more energy is required then what is released.
What do Catalysts do?
Reduce the amount of energy that is needed to start a reaction.
(Think of it as more energy efficent, aka low battery mode.)
When do Anabolic reactions occur?
With ENDERgonic reactions.
When do Catabolic reactions occur?
With EXERgonic reactions.
Why do exergonic reactions HAVE to occur before endergonic ones?
Excergonic reactions help set up the energy required for endergonic reactions to take place.
