neurons Flashcards

1
Q

what are neurons responsible for?

A

they conduct nerve impulses in cells
they are responsible for what we think and feel, say and do, as these things are controlled by electrochemical events occurring within and between the neurons that make up the nervous system, particularly those in the brain (80%)

Q

what are the key parts of the neurons?

A

nucleus- controls centre of a cell which contains chromosomal DNA
dendrite- receives the nerve impulse/signal from adjacent neurons
axon- where the electrical signals pass along
myelin sheath- insulates/protects the axon from external influences that might affect the transmission of the nerve impulse down the axon
nodes of Ranvier- speed up the transmission of the impulse by forcing it to jump
terminal buttons- send signals to an adjacent neuron

Q

what does the motor neuron do?

A

carries messages from the CNS to effectors (muscles and glands)

Q

what does the relay neuron do?

A

this interconnecting neuron transfers messages from the sensory neuron to other interconnecting neurons or motor neurons

Q

what does the sensory neuron do?

A

carries messages from the PNS to the brain and spinal cord

it has long dendrites and short axons
