1A - Natural Hazards Flashcards
1
Q
1A1.1 - What is a natural hazard?
A
An event which has a huge social impact
2
Q
1A1.1 - What are the four types of natural hazards?
A
- Tectonic: Involving movement of tectonic plates
- Atmospheric: Weather related
- Geomorphilogical: Occuring on the earth’s surface
- Biological: Involving living organisms
3
Q
1A1.1 - What factors affect risk of natural hazards?
A
- Urbanisation: Concrete and paving means increased surface run-off and so higher risk of flooding. Tall buildings fall easier in earthquakes
- Climate Change: Warmer weather means means the atmosphere has more energy/more intense storms
- Poverty: Shortage of safe housing means so safe places after houses get destroyed
- Farming: Farmers want to live on floodplains which would increase chance on flooding (duh)
4
Q
1A2.1 - Where are earthquakes distributed?
A
Mainly around tectonic plate boundaries
5
Q
1A2.1 - What are the two types of plates?
A
- Dense, thin, oceanic crust
- Less dense, thick, oceanic crust
