Unit 4 - Digestive system Flashcards
Buccal cavity
The portion of the oral cavity surrounded by the lips, cheeks, and gums.
Salivary glands
Any of various glands that discharge a fluid secretion and especially saliva into the mouth. Parotid glands, sublingual glands, submandibular glands.
Epiglottis
A flap in the throat that keeps food from entering the windpipe.
Oesophagus
The oesophagus is a long, muscular tube that connects your mouth to your stomach. When you swallow food, the walls of the oesophagus squeeze together (contract). This moves the food down the oesophagus to the stomach.
Stomach
The stomach is a muscular organ located on the left side of the upper abdomen. The stomach receives food from the oesophagus.
Small intestine
The small intestine’s job is to absorb most of the nutrients from what we eat and drink. Velvety tissue lines the small intestine, which is divided into the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum.
Large intestine
The large intestine is the last part of the gastrointestinal tract and of the digestive system in vertebrates. Water is absorbed here and the remaining waste material is stored as faeces before being removed by defecation.
Anus
The opening at the end of the alimentary canal through which solid waste matter leaves the body.
