What is the mesial surface?

A

The surface closest to the midline

66
Q

What is the distal surface?

A

The tooth surface furthest from the centre line

67
Q

What is the buccal surface?

A

Tooth surface nearest the inside of the cheek

68

70
Q

What is the palatal surface?

A

71
Q

What is the occlusal surface?

A

The biting or chewing surface of the premolars and molars

72
Q

What are the cusps?

A

Sharp, pointed surface extensions on the pre molars and molars

73
Q

What is the Incisal edge?

A

The sharp cutting edges of the incisors and canine teeth

74
Q

What are the 5 coronal features of the tooth?

A
  1. Outline form of the crown
  2. Cuspal form (number, position, shape size)
  3. Incisal form (shape of edges and incisal corners)
  4. Pits/Fossae (groove numbers and positioning)
  5. Fissure pattern on occlusal surface
75
Q

What are pits in the teeth?

A

They are depressions on the occlusal surface

76
Q

What are the 9 outlines (shapes) the posterior teeth can have?

A
Pentagon
Rectangular
Rhomboid
Heart
Oval
Diamond
Square
Rounded
Angular
77
Q

What are the 3 outlines (shapes) the posterior teeth can have?

A

Trapezium
Pentagon
Wedge/triangular

78
Q

How can you distinguish between a maxillary molar and mandibular molar?

A

Maxillary molars have 3 roots (Mesio-buccal, disto-buccal & palatal roots)
Mandibular molars have 2 roots (Mesial root & distal roots teeth)

79
Q

Describe the palatal root

A

Largest root

Circular in cross section

80
Q

Describe the buccal roots

A

Slender

Flattened messy-distally

81
Q

Describe full the upper left first permanent molar

A

Classification: UL6 or 26
A large tooth with a rhomboidal occlusal outline
Has 4 main cusps largest to smallest:, mesio-palatal (MP), mesio-buccal (MB), disto-buccal (DB) & disto-palatal (DP)
1 accessory mesio-palatal cusp (the cusp of carabelli)
Messial fossa and a mid buccal fossa
Oblique ridge running diagonally from the MP to the DB dividing the occlusal surface
Disto palatal fissures runs from the distal fossa and ends in the palatal groove
3 roots; a palatal root which is longer and circular in cross section. The buccal roots are more slender and flattened, mesio-buccal root larger and wider than disto-buccal root.

82
Q

What is an overjet?

A

Horizontal distance between the upper incisor edge and the lower incisor edge

83
Q

What is an overbite?

A

Vertical distance, coverage of lower incisor teeth by the upper incisor teeth

84
Q

What is the intercuspal position?

A

When a patient closes their back teeth so that their teeth are maximally meshed together
the unrestored dentition occlusal contacts provide stability where a cusp fits into a fossa or where it meets a marginal ridge of teeth in the opposing arch

85
Q

What is our professional responsibility in regard to dental records?

A

They must be accurate, truthful and reflect the true state of events seen at the time
They must also be written at the time of the appointment
They are legal records

86
Q

What can dental records be used as?

A

They ca be used as evidence by the GDC following a complaint of a dental professional
They are crucial and vital evidence for forensic investigations in terms of criminal trials

87
Q

What 3 things can forensic dentists do?

A

Bite mark analysis
Disaster victim identification
Dental human identification
