Lecture Vocabs Flashcards
Steps of embryogenesis
Cleavage, gastrulation, oganogenesis
Cleavage
many rapid mitotic cell divisions dividing the embryo into many diploid cells
Gastrulation
Extensive cell and tissue rearrangement to form structures through different layers.
Endoderm
Gut, digestive organs
Mesoderm
Muscle, organs
Ectoderm
Outer surface, nervous system
Organogenesis
Cell populations actually differentiate to form organs such as heart, nervous system, and gut. Occurs before animal hatches or is born.
Goal of postembryonic development
Develop sexually mature organisms
produce all kinds of cells
totipotent
differential gene expression
- each cell expresses just a subset of genes.
2. each cell type is a manifestation of distinctive set of gene products which make up that cell.
