20
Q

Why is the left side of the heart bigger than the right

A

This is due to the higher forces needed to pump blood around the body

21
Q

What are capillaries

A

Narrow blood tubes

22
Q

What is plasma

A

The liquid portion of the blood

23
Q

What type of blood cells contain haemoglobin

A

Red blood cells

24
Q

What are platelets

A

Help the blood clot and so keeps out dirt when you get a cut

25
Q

What do white blood cells do

A

Fight against disease occurring

26
Q

Does a fit or unfit person have a higher heartbeat on average

A

Unfit

27
Q

What effect does the exercise have in the coronary arteries

A

They become wider so fatty deposits become less likely

28
Q

What does blood transport around the body

A
Oxygen
Food
Energy
White blood cells
Capillaries
29
Q

What size and shape is bacteria

A

Shaped like either a sphere rod or spiral

Very tiny

30
Q

Why are bacteria dangerous

A

They can live in any area of the Earth no matter how hot or cold

31
Q

Why are bacteria useful

A

They include probiotics which fight off bad bacteria and help you digest better

32
Q

Describe the size of viruses

A

Smaller than bacteria

Super small

33
Q

Viruses are dangerous because

A

Make you and other people feel sick. Cause diseases like measles

34
Q

How can viruses be useful

A

Cowpox let us know how to vaccinate and kill viruses

35
Q

Describe what the structure of fungi is

A

Looks like mushrooms or yeast

36
Q

What does respiration do

A

It is the reaction that provides energy to each cell

36
Q

What do we call the blood vessel that travels out of the liver

A

Hepatic Vein

37
Q

Why are fungi dangerous

A

They look safe to eat but make you really sick

Make your skin crack and bleed

38
Q

Fungi is useful because

A

Made to use antibiotics which help get rid of a lot of infection which is good

39
Q

What term is used to describe a microbe that causes disease

A

Pathogen

40
Q

Why is it recommended to work near a Bunsen burner when making growth plates

A

Kills the bacteria in the air

41
Q

Why do you incubate your Petra dish upside down

A

Gives bacteria more access to air

42
Q

What is an outbreak

A

When a disease spreads quickly among people

43
Q

What type of virus causes the flu

A

Influenza

44
Q

Define epidemic

A

A major outbreak in one country or city

45
Q

Define pandemic

A

A worldwide outbreak

46
Q

Name the 4 points of double circulation

A
  1. Blood enters the heart. It is deoxygenated
  2. Blood is pumped to the lungs to pick up some oxygen
  3. Blood is now oxygenated and travels back to the heart.
  4. Blood is then pumped around the body so every cell gets its vital oxygen so that every cell can carry out the process of respiration.
