“I have done the deed.”
Macbeth has killed Duncan.
“That hath made them drunk hath made me bold. What hath quenched them hath given me fire.”
The wine that Lady Macbeth has drunk has given her a sense of boldness, and has stirred her will to do the deed.
“It was the owl that shrieked, the fatal bellman.”
Lady Macbeth hears an owl shriek, which represents death (similar to the raven). She compares the owl to a crier (an officer who makes public announcements in court).
“Alack, I am afraid they have awaked, and ‘tis not done. Th’attempt and not the deed confounds us.”
Lady Macbeth worries that Macbeth has not killed Duncan and has been caught red-handed.
“But wherefore could not I pronounce ‘Amen’? I had most need of blessing and ‘Amen’ stuck in my throat.”
Macbeth can’t say ‘Amen’ to the prayers because he feels guilty about the murder. He also feels he needs a blessing.
